Professional Credentials

The Oregon Career Development Association offers the following definitions to assist consumers in selecting a career development professional that meets their needs. 

GCDF - Global Career Development Facilitators are certified through the Center for Credentialing in Education and have completed an approved CDF curriculum that includes 120 hours of classroom training and field experience in twelve CDF Competency areas.  They are bound by a code of ethics, and meet a combination of education and work experience as specified in the credential guidelines:
graduate degree plus an estimated one year of career development work experience;
bachelor's degree plus an estimated two years of career development work experience;
two years of college plus an estimated three years of career development work experience; or
a high school diploma/GED plus an estimated four years of career development work experience.

MCC - Master Career Counselor is an NCDA member who holds a master's degree in counseling or related field and has been active as an NCDA member for a minimum of two years. A MCC has at least three years of post-master's experience in career counseling and also maintains the NCC, state LPCC, RPCC, or licensed psychologist credential. MCCs have successfully completed at least three credits of coursework in each of the six NCDA Competency areas and have completed a supervised career counseling practicum or two years of supervised career counseling work experience under a certified supervisor or licensed counseling professional. MCCs are skilled in administering and interpreting career assessments and provide the highest quality of career counseling services.  For more information, go to: www.ncda.org

NCC - Nationally Certified Counselors are certified through the National Board for Certified Counselors.  NCC’s hold an advanced degree with a major study in counseling from a regionally accredited college or university.  They also meet specific semester or quarter hour requirements and content area requirements.  In addition, they have completed a supervised internship and post master’s supervision and have achieved a national passing score on the National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification (NCE).  For more information, go to: www.nbcc.org

LPC - Licensed Professional Counselors in Oregon are licensed through the Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists.  LPC’s hold an advanced degree in counseling from an approved, regionally accredited college or university.  They also meet specific semester or quarter hour requirements and content area requirements.  In addition, they have completed a supervised internship and three years of post-master’s supervision.  LPC’s have also achieved a national passing score on the National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification (NCE) and passed an Oregon law and rules exam.  For more information, go to: www.oblpct.state.or.us

Bachelor’s Degree - An award that requires completion of an organized program of study of at least 4 but not more than 5 years of full time academic study with at least 120, but less than 150 semester credit hours. 

Master's Degree - A degree that requires completion of an organized program of study of at least one full-time but not more than 2 academic years of work beyond the Bachelor's degree, consisting of at least 30 but less than 60 semester hours.  The Masters Degree classification includes such degrees as Master of Art (M.A.), Master of Education Degree (M.Ed.), and Master of Science (M.S.). 

Doctorate Degree - The highest degree a student can earn for graduate study.  The Doctorate Degree classification includes such degrees as Doctor of Education (Ed.D.), Doctor of Juridical Science, Doctor of Public Health, and the Doctor of Philosophy in any field.  The designation for a Doctorate Degree is 'Ph.D.'
